Organization Description: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Alaska helps children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships. BBBS believes creating and supporting successful friendships between caring adults and children who need and want them will contribute to brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities
Volunteer Opportunity: Core Mentoring Programs are as follows:
Site-Based Program: Bigs meet with their Littles for an hour a week during the year at the Little’s elementary school or with an incarcerated teen at the Johnson Youth Center. Bigs agree to meet consistently with their Littles for at least one calendar year. Big Brothers and Big Sisters are of high school age or older; Littles are in kindergarten through eighth grade.
Community Program: Bigs spend time with their Littles two to four times a month for a couple of hours each visit doing activities both enjoy. Big Brothers and Big Sisters are at least 18 years of age or older, Littles are 6-17 years old. Bigs agree to meet consistently with their Littles for at least one year. BBBS offers free group activities once per month for Bigs and Littles. A couple match occurs when two Bigs in a stable relationship are matched with a Little.
No special skills are needed — Bigs are friends who spend time with a Little, hanging out, playing games, talking, and being a friend. At any give time we have between 10 and 20 boys in need of a male mentor.
