City museum to host special presentation on Sydney Laurence

Art historian and curator Keslar Woodward will lead a special presentation on Alaska painter Sydney Laurence from 7- 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, at the Juneau Douglas City Museum.

In his presentation, “Sydney Laurence: Painter of the North,” Woodward will discuss some of the myths and mysteries of one of the state’s most beloved historical painters. Woodward will also take a look at Laurence’s influence on viewers of his artwork and the potential and perils of being an artist in Alaska.

Woodward has published seven books on Alaskan art, including the first comprehensive survey of the fine arts in Alaska, “Painting in the North.” Before moving to Fairbanks in 1981, he served as curator of visual arts at the Alaska State Museum and as artistic director of the Visual Arts Center of Alaska. In Fairbanks he served as chair of the art department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he taught for two decades before retiring in 2000 to paint full time.
