Summer reading prizes

Kids in Juneau are reading this summer and writing reviews of their books. A drawing from the review entries is held each week at the three public libraries. Winners receive prizes generously donated by local businesses.

The Valley branch winner for this week is:

Keeley Rielly, age 6

Brownie and Pearl Step Out by Cynthia Rylant

Why I chose it: “I chose it because (it is) the color pink and because the kitty has a flower in her hair. I thought it would be a good book about a birthday party. Other little girls might like it.”

She won a gift certificate from the Imagination Station.

Douglas branch winners for this week are:

Armando Rodriguez, age 4

What a Good Big Brother by Diane Wright Landolf

Why I chose it: “Because I am going to be a big brother; because you can kiss the baby toes and the baby smiles. Big brothers might like this book.”

He won a pass from Mount Roberts Tramway.

Ashleigh Neal, age 11

The Vile Village by Lemony Snicket.

Why I chose it: “Because the rest of the series was wonderful, because it was suspenseful. My friend Helena might like it.”

She won a gift certificate from the Amazing Bookstore in the Airport Shopping Center.

Downtown branch winners for this week are:

Katie Strehler, age 16

The Answer is Always Yes by Monica Ferrell.

“I chose this book because it is about a college student in New York – an age group that interests me. This book is narrated from the prospective of a German psychologist.” Teens and mature readers might like this book.

She won a pass from Gross Alaska Theatres.

Kaidin King, age 7

Magic Tree House No. 2 by Mary Osborne

“I like Magic Tree House books. I like the knight and kids my age might like it.”

She won a gift certificate from Peer Amid Beads.

Valley branch winners for last week were:

Victoria Perez, age 14

Sealed with a Diss by Lisi Harrison

Why I chose it: The plaid cover was astonishing.

Why I finished it: I wanted to finish the whole series.

Who else might like it: People who have standards for boys and are in need of help lowering them.

She won a gift certificate from the Alaska Shirt Company

Dani Witt, age 7

Joseph had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback

Why I chose it: It looked good.

Why I finished it: It’s good.

Who else might like it: Grandpas.

Juneau branch winners for last week were:

Dane Hubert, age 3

One, Two, Buckle My Shoe by Jane Cabrera

My mommy chose it because it was a new book and it had to do with numbers. I liked looking for 4 chicks on each page. Anyone who like “Eye Spy” books might like it.

Dane won a pass from Mt Roberts Tram

Dessa Gerger, age 9

The Black Circle by Patrick Carmen

It is exciting and you will really want to live it. The story was very engrossing and sucks you in. If you like history and realistic stories, you might like this book.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

I chose this book because the first book was good. It was suspenseful and my parents might like to read it.

Maisy Goes Camping by Lucy Cousins

This book was cute. It was easy to read. Kids pre-K would like this book.
