Barking spaniel alerts owner of cabin fire

FAIRBANKS — The owner of a 1-year-old English springer spaniel is crediting his dog for escaping a fire that destroyed his Fairbanks cabin.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that a fire on Friday destroyed Jason McDaniel’s cabin with speed. But McDaniel was able to get out of the cabin after he was woken up by his springer’s barks.

The dog — named Willy — began barking after the fire lit up on a couch next to his kennel.

McDaniel said he only had time to put on pants, grab Willy and run out before smoke took over the cabin. He says flames were coming out of the roof by the time he got out.
