Library reading winners for the week of July 24, 2011

Kids coming into any of the three public libraries this summer may enter a weekly drawing for prizes donated by local businesses. To enter the drawing, write a book review on forms available at the library or online at


This program is open to all kids through teens.

Downtown winners (from 66 reviews)

Jamie Hort, age 9.

He won a gift certificate from Nugget Alaskan Outfitters.

He read “Captain Underpants and the Big Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy” by Dav Pilkey.

He wrote “I chose it because it looked so funny. It was such a good book — I could not stop reading it. Everyone who loves funny stories might like it.”

Madeline Kleinschmiolt, age 12.

She won a gift certificate from Peer Amid Beads.

She read “Ready or Not” by Meg Cabot

She wrote “Meg Cabot is my favorite author and I’m trying to read all her books. It (this book) was really good and always made me want to know what would happen next. My friend Katelyn might like it.”

Valley winners (from 52 reviews)

Joshua Garrigues, age 6.

He won a gift certificate to the Amazing Book Store in the Airport Mall.

He read “Snowflake Bentley” by J. Briggs Martin.

He wrote “I like snow! He was an interesting man. Anyone who likes wintertime might like this book.”

Jacob Hammond, age 10.

He won a gift certificate from Gross-Alaska Theatres.

He read “Peril in the Palace” by Paul McCusker and Marianne Hering.

He wrote “I read the other series (Imagination Station) of historical fiction. People who like going back in time in a station that uses your imagination might like this book.”

Alice Tapp, age 9.

She won a gift certificate to the Imagination Station.

She read “Raven Goes Berrypicking” by Anne Cameron.

She wrote “I chose it because it was a Raven book and I got to read it. Helen might like this book.”

Gretchen Neal, age 10.

She won a gift certificate from the Alaskan Fudge Company.

She read “Sticky Burr” by John Lechner.

She wrote “It was recommended. The characters were extremely funny! My little sister might like it.”

Adult Summer Reading Group

Christina Gutierrez is the winner of the first Adult Summer Reading prize drawing. She won two tickets to Perseverance Theatre’s season opener “The 39 Steps” and a copy of the John Buchan novel which inspired Hitchcock’s film adaptation. These prizes were donated by Perseverance Theatre and the Friends of the Juneau Public libraries. The next drawing will be Aug. 20th so keep the reviews coming!
