Juneau-Douglas High School students recognized

Seven students were recognized by Juneau-Douglas High School Oct. 19, for their exceptional performance. It was the first Student Recognition Ceremony of the 2011-2012 school year. The program recognizes high school students who might not otherwise be commended for a job well done. It was started in 1989 by parents with assistance from the administrators and staff at JDHS. The nominees are generally recognized for accomplishments within the school setting and are nominated by teachers and staff. The University of Alaska Southeast awards a scholarship to one senior nominee in a May ceremony.

Early efforts for the program included community sponsors for the awards; the Juneau Lions Club donated funds for a limited edition pin by William Spear, Juneau designer, and are still distributed each month to nominees by Assistant Principal Paula Casperson. Nominees also receive a legislative citation after listening to an inspirational speech from an honored guest from the community.

This month, J. Allan MacKinnon, one of initial organizers and former Rotary Club president, offered inspirational words as well as a historic perspective on the celebration. Following the awards, parents and students enjoyed a lunch organized by the JDHS Parent Group that featured Chicken Fettuccini donated by the Douglas Cafe.

Cindy Pastorino, AVID Program faculty member, nominated Patrick Endozo, 10th grade. Of Endozo, Pastorino had to say, “Patrick proves himself to be an outstanding student in our AVID class. He comes to class prepared and ready to learn, he has great organization skills as demonstrated in his binder, and his Cornell Notes are a model for all students to follow. He collaborates well with his peers and makes valuable contributions to his tutorial group. He consistently produces quality work, demonstrates a strong work ethic, and is often in our room during lunch and enrichment completing schoolwork. Patrick is conscientious student — his individual determination will take him far in life.”

Leslie Knight of the business department nominated Cyanne Garcia, a senior. Knight wrote, “Cyanne Garcia has been a lifesaver to me this year. She has helped organize my classroom and my classes. Cyanne is currently a student intern; she takes initiative and is dependable. Cyanne is an outstanding student who earned an ‘A’ in Accounting and Career Based Learning.”

Physical Education teacher Kelly McCormick nominated another senior, Lance Ibesate. She said, “Lance is the only student in the school so far to have achieved the presidential physical fitness award and it’s the second semester in a row. Way to go Lance!”

Gaye Willis in the Attendance Office nominated senior, Elena Lamas. Of Lamas, Willis said, “Elena Lamas is my aide in the attendance office during fifth hour this semester. She is a wonderful help. She, along with the other aides, did a tremendous job pulling the files from last year and setting up new files for this year. Elena has been tireless in keeping the filing up to date. She is a quiet, consistent, capable worker. Due to the confidential nature of this work, only students who are deemed trustworthy are allowed to work in the attendance office. It is a high compliment to be approved as an attendance office aide by the administration.”

Karen Boddy of the Counseling Department nominated William “Moe” Lott, a senior. She said, “Moe has done an excellent job for the counseling Office as our first hour aide. Although Moe is very quiet he does give us an occasional smile, which lights up his face. Moe is respectful and polite to everyone in the office and those who come in for assistance. He has taken initiative on many occasions to complete routine tasks without being asked. He tackles every project immediately and completes things in record time. He has displayed a great work ethic. We are very glad to have him with us.”

Dixie Weiss of the world languages department nominated two students, senior Thane Maxwell and junior Ellis Notmeyer. Of these students, Weiss wrote, “they are always willing to offer technical expertise in our Spanish class when I need to adapt the available equipment to the older resources in our Spanish program. Their abilities are respected outside our classroom as well.”
