Murkowski announces Service Academy nominees

Sen. Lisa Murkowski recently announced that she has nominated 37 young Alaskans for appointment to the U.S. military service academies for the class of 2016.

“This year’s nominees are stellar candidates who embody the leadership capabilities and strong characters we expect from our men and women in uniform,” Murkowski said. “It is a privilege to nominate such accomplished Alaskans for admission to our service academies.”

Nominees were selected based on their academic record, extracurricular activities and potential for leadership. Murkowski’s nominees will now compete against other nationwide candidates for a space in the entering class. A congressional nomination does not guarantee admission to a service academy; service academies will make the final decisions.

From Juneau-Douglas High School, Murkowski nominated Claressa Ullmayer.

From Thunder Mountain High School, Murkowski nominated Allen Shaw and Wilson Suzuki.
