Flying Lions bring Hobo Jim to town

Posted: February 5, 2012 - 12:02am

The Mendenhall Flying Lions Club and Marlintini’s Lounge teamed up to bring musician Hobo Jim to Juneau for two concerts. The concerts will be held Feb. 10 and 11 at 8pm at Marlintini’s Lounge.

Hobo Jim is considered by many an Alaskan legend. After many years of working in Alaska as a commercial fisherman, logger, as well as cowboy, Hobo took to writing songs about his occupations and wilderness lifestyle.

In 1994, the Alaska state legislature and governor named Hobo Jim “Alaska’s state balladeer.”

Jim now performs regularly throughout the state of Alaska, as well as across the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, Australia and he recently returned from performing for the troops in Afghanistan.

Hobo Jim will headline this year’s Alaska state Fair as usual. His other headline credits include the Telluride Bluegrass festival and the Kerrville Folk Festival.

He has recorded six albums as well as three children’s records.

These performances will raise funds to help defray medical expenses for Joseph (Joey) Vuille and other Lions Club projects.

Joey recently underwent brain surgery to remove a pituitary tumor and syst. The tumor was causing partial blindness and, if not removed, would have caused total blindness.

Lions Clubs around the world are known for their fight against preventable blindness, responding to a challenge in 1925 by Helen Keller to become “Knights of the Blind.”

Locally, the Lions perform vision screenings at the various schools, daycares, and health fairs, as well provide eye exams and glasses for those in need.

Tickets for the concerts are $15 per person and are available at G.W. Teals, Marlintini’s Lounge or from any Lions Club member. Attendees must be 21 or accompanied by a legal guardian.
