Posted: February 5, 2012 - 12:14am

This week’s state museum lunch-time lecture to focus on the history of Kake.

The Andrew P Kashevarof Memorial Lecture Series continues this week with “An Early History of Kake,” presented by Anastasia Tarmann. The talk runs from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Alaska State Museum.

Tarmann, an Alaska State Library Historical Collections librarian, will review documents relating to the 20th century history of Kake, such as the 1912 destruction of nearly all the totem poles, the founding of the municipality, the history of the Kake Day celebration, and the 1971 raising of one of the world’s tallest totem poles.

The lecture is free and attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch.
