2012 Wellness for Caregivers Training Workshop

“Planning Ahead” is the theme of the annual Wellness for Caregivers workshop. The goal is to give family caregivers an opportunity to plan ahead before a crisis happens. The workshop will take place Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Juneau Tlingit & Haida Community Center, 3235 Hospital Drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The target audience is unpaid tribal family caregivers providing care of elders; these may be spouses, daughters, sons, grandchildren, friends or neighbors who are there to assist an elder with their needs.

Participants will obtain information regarding important legal documents to manage an elder’s state of affairs, who to call to access social and health services, medical care transitions when an elder has to transition from home to hospital or assisted living facility, then back home and end of life planning information.

We encourage pre-registration by March 5, 2012 for participants to receive workshop materials.

The morning presentations will include important legal documents by Holly Handler, ALSC Attorney and Andrea Ebona-Michel; medical care forms by Ed Williams of Ethel Lund medical Center; and end of life planning from a life insurance company.

The afternoon will include question and answer time with resource agency information tables Cornerstone Home Health Care, Sealaska Corporation Shareholder Relations, Southeast Alaska Independent Living, Inc., Alzheimer’s Association, Social Security Administration, Ethel Lund Medical Center and Hospice & Home Care.

The workshop will end with “Natural Remedies — What do you do to take care of yourself as a caregiver?”

Lastly, participant names will be drawn for door prizes from evaluation forms.

To register call: 463-7168 or 463-7131 or email amichel@ccthita.org.

The program is funded by the Administration on Aging HHS-Title VI Part C grant
