Get connected to volunteer opportunities

In February, United Way of Southeast Alaska partnered with Galaxy Digital, a web-based communications firm, to develop Get Connected, a community engagement and volunteer management platform to be incorporated into the volunteer section of our website ( Get Connected allows non-profit organizations in Southeast Alaska to post available advocacy, employment, and volunteer opportunities as well as in-kind donation needs, while also allowing interested individuals or groups to search for volunteer opportunities tailored to their availability and interest.

Similar to social media platforms like Facebook or Google+, regional non-profit organizations create profiles on Get Connected that highlight their mission statements, contact information, needs, and events. Likewise, interested volunteers create individual profiles specifically tailored to their interests, join volunteer groups, become fans of participating agencies, and track non-profit agencies’ needs and events.

“Think of it as a dating service between regional non-profit organizations and individuals in specific communities who would like to get involved in something they believe in or that interests them,” said Wayne Stevens, president and CEO of United Way of Southeast Alaska. “If we can tell the story of an agency and get people passionate about what that agency does, then we can get people engaged. There are lots of people out there willing to get involved and give back, but they’re not sure how to get started. Get Connected helps both sides of the equation.”

To sign up as a participating agency, agency representatives should visit, click on the blue agency signup button, and complete the agency registration form.

After submitting one’s agency registration form, that request will be sent to the site manager. Once the request has been reviewed, the requestor will receive an email with further instructions on how to manage your Agency profile.

To sign up as an interested volunteer, visit and click on the red login/join button to fill out the new user registration. Receive custom notifications about volunteer opportunities of interest by selecting specific areas of interests by activity type (cleaning, tutoring, etc.), event type (auctions, walk/runs, etc), and organization services (arts/culture, homelessness, seniors, etc.) as well as receive custom notifications about specific regional non-profit organizations by becoming a fan of the organization.

Anyone interested in volunteering for a non-profit organization not included on Get Connected may provide United Way with the name of the organization, and they will contact the organizations regarding Get Connected.

United Way of Southeast Alaska is an independently governed, non-profit organization dedicated to addressing individual needs and improving lives and community conditions by organizing the caring and collaborative power of communities in Southeast Alaska.

For that reason, United Way of Southeast Alaska is providing this unique community engagement and volunteer management tool free of charge to regional non-profit organizations and individuals, in an attempt, to foster engagement and volunteerism in communities across Southeast Alaska.
