Alaskan students gather at Capitol for environmental action

Juneau teen Natalie Wade joined a diverse group of teenagers — with participants from Barrow to Ninilchik to Sitka — for the week-long Civics and Conservation Summit in Juneau with Alaska Youth for Environmental Action, a program of National Wildlife Federation.

On March 22, the students gathered on the steps of the Alaska State Capitol to present three elected officials with the 2012 AYEA Legislator of the Year award. Those honored were Sen. Gary Stevens (R-Kodiak), Sen. Bill Wielechowski (D-Anchorage) and Sen. Hollis French (D-Anchorage) for their work championing issues the teens care about, including protecting Bristol Bay, stopping genetically modified fish, providing funding for school lunches and Coastal Zone Management.

Natalie met with Senator Egan and Representative Muñoz to discuss House Bill 100, which would ban genetically engineered salmon from being in Alaska.

The Civics and Conservation Summit is an annual youth leadership training that brings teens from diverse regions of the state together to build skills in civic action, issue analysis, advocacy and statewide leadership.
