The 3rd Annual Juneau Maritime Festival will take place May 12 from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. at Marine Park Plaza and Pavilion in downtown Juneau. Organizers hope this year’s event will be as successful as the last two as they continue to celebrate Juneau’s maritime history, culture and commerce. Sealaska, Alaska Marine Lines, Marine Exchange, Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, and Alaska Glacier Seafoods have already committed as key sponsors for the Festival. Businesses can support the Festival with a sponsorship contribution, in-kind resources or through time volunteering.
The 2012 Festival will offer spotlights on local seafood, marine recreation, maritime commerce, local environmental and climate awareness, displays and demonstrations, maritime culture and waterfront planning.
The 2011 Juneau Maritime Festival featured a traditional native greeting ceremony, the One People Canoe Society’s canoe race, fish filleting demonstrations by Taku Smokeries and Alaska Glacier Seafoods, salmon sampling grill hosted by Alaska Glacier Seafoods, Taku Smokeries and ASMI, demonstrations of vessel tracking technologies by Marine Exchange of Alaska and RDI, Inc., a comprehensive display of CBJ and Docks and Harbors projects in design or under construction along the waterfront, kids’ activities, tours of local vessels, Alaska’s best marinade contest, a United States Coast Guard rescue demonstration, among many other activities.
The Festival brings together key members of the maritime industry, local businesses, regulatory and research agencies in Juneau to showcase the significance of Juneau’s maritime history, culture and commerce. The Juneau Economic Development Council (JEDC) actively promotes the Juneau Maritime Festival each year with the help of a dedicated group of local citizens and organizations. The Festival organizing committee is open to new ideas and volunteers. The Maritime Festival also seeks donations of wine corks for a children’s boat building activity. Start saving.
