United Way invites applicants for 2012 Community Impact Grant

United Way of Southeast Alaska and its 36 partner agencies serve community needs throughout Southeast Alaska. More recently, United Way of Southeast Alaska has adopted a Literacy by Third Grade initiative as its focus to help ensure children are reading at grade level by the time they complete third grade. For decades, research has shown a correlation between third grade literacy and educational success, graduation rates, crime rates, substance abuse, and employment. Statistics indicate nearly 50 percent of our children are not ready to learn when they begin kindergarten. Literacy rates have far reaching impacts upon individuals and, in turn, communities.

United Way of Southeast Alaska is now accepting Community Impact Grant applications designed to assist community needs as they relate to early literacy. Funds will be awarded to successful grant applicants pursuing efforts designed to eliminate barriers or supporting Literacy by Third Grade. Depending on the applications received, United Way of Southeast Alaska may elect to award one or more applications developing or enhancing Literacy by Third Grade.

Alternatively, United Way of Southeast Alaska offers a separate Matching Grant for programs or projects not specifically addressing the issue of early literacy. Such applications should be based on a documented need in the community. This matching grant will generally not exceed $1,500 for any individual award. The criteria used in the past will guide the selection process: collaboration, matching funds, and having a clearly stated focused achievable goal with measurable outcomes.

Grant applications are available on United Way of Southeast Alaska’s homepage www.unitedwayseak.org under Latest Events. This is a competitive grant application process for 2012 year. Applications are not limited to United Way of Southeast Alaska partner agencies. Applicants may collaborate with United Way partner agencies or other non-profit entities.

All applications are welcome and may be submitted by mail or in person to the United Way office no later than 4 p.m., April 30. Applications received by United Way of Southeast Alaska after the deadline will not be considered. Please submit completed applications to: United Way of Southeast Alaska Community Impact Committee, Katherine Eldemar, Chair, P.O. Box 20249, or 3225 Hospital Drive #201, Juneau, AK 99802. If you have any questions please call 463-5530.
