Volunteer firefighter of the month: April

Capital City Fire and Rescue volunteer firefighter and EMT Kathy Miller at the Fourth of July events in 2011.

Name: Kathy Miller

Credentials: Firefighter 1, EMT 3

District: Lynn Canal

Employer: Retired Public Health nurse, full time Grandma of Bubbs

How long with the fire service: almost 4 years

Activity: Kathy is one of our most active firefighter/EMTs. She was one of our top folks in activity for both responding and training hours. She can be found on B shift days riding at Glacier station with the career staff to keep her EMS skills sharpened. She is an excellent bridge between the career and volunteer staff and even co-wrote a section in our volunteer handbook titled “How to Ride Successfully”. Last summer she also became an EMT instructor. She does regular inventory checks on our ambulance at Auke Bay station.

Reason nominating: Kathy is juggling her grandson and is still a huge help to the department. She assists on most EMS drills with skill stations and teaches EMT class sections regularly. She also teaches CPR for the department. She is on our EMS committee and is our resident expert on exposure control topics. She is always willing to “check her schedule” and help out. She has a great smile, good sense of humor, and a willingness to bring cookies.
