Gabriel Wechter

Bachelor of Science, Mathematics

Gabriel Wechter is receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. He was drawn to UAS from Oregon State University because of Juneau’s accessibility to mountain sports.

“I came here on the National Student Exchange,” Wechter said. “I chose Juneau mainly because of the ice climbing and the mountains nearby. I’ve always been into mountain climbing.”

Wechter began studying physics at OSU’s Cascade campus and discovered his love for mathematics.

“I was taking a calculus class and I decided to look up [things] online and [I] ended up stumbling on some of the higher mathematics stuff that really interested me. I realized I enjoyed math more than any kind of applied [physics].”

What are Wechter’s favorite things about UAS?

“Aside from the awesome climbing, I think UAS really got me stoked on math more so than if I would have stayed in Oregon, just being able to work so closely with professors. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life coming [to UAS]. I’ve met so many awesome people and I’ve just had a great time here, especially this year working on my senior project. I call it infinite exponentials. My project has kind of been finding a general solution to what numbers it works for and what numbers it doesn’t work for.”

After graduation Wechter plans on taking a break to enjoy what Alaska has to offer before pursuing a Masters or Doctoral degree in mathematics.

“I can’t wait,” he said. “I’ve got a couple big trips planned for the summer. Doing Denali in June and I might do a couple ice field traverses.”
