B.A.M.'s the word

B.A.M. and J.U.M.P. were both winning names for the before-and-after school activities program at Dzantik ‘i Heeni and Floyd Dryden middle schools in the Name the Program Contest voting April 26 and 27.

B.A.M. (Body and Mind) was the winner at FDMS. It was submitted by Rainey Hinkley, an eighth-grader at DHMS. J.U.M.P. (Juneau’s Unbelievable Middle School Program) was the winner at DHMS. It was submitted by Gabrielle Scales, a sixth-grader at FDMS. Both students were awarded a cash prize of $25 each by the Juneau Afterschool Coalition (JASC).

651 votes were cast at both schools. Although J.U.M.P. was the overall winner by just 47 votes — after the vote, when it was remembered another group in Juneau uses the name, the two groups agreed it would be best to avoid confusing the community with the same name and JASC did not want to cause difficulties for a group that had been using the name for a number of years. With the overall vote close and because each name had been a winner at one of the schools, the JASC steering committee decided B.A.M. would be the name of the before-and-after school activities program at both schools.

J.U.M.P. received 349 total votes and B.A.M. received 302 total votes from both schools.

DHMS and FDMS students submitted a total of 109 entries in the contest between April 2 and 13. FDMS students Gabe Crawford and Ellie Alsup and DHMS students Helen Reed and Krystin Barney, with assistance from teachers Jeannette Sleppy and Luke Fortier, met and narrowed the list of entries to 19 semi-finalists.

Juneau School District Assistant Superintendent Laury Scandling and Communications Manager Kristin Bartlett chose two finalists from the committee’s list to be voted on. None of those picking the semi-finalists or finalists knew who had submitted the entry or which school they attended.

With the help of community volunteers, staff of partner organizations and sponsorships by community groups, the Juneau Afterschool Coalition is working closely with both middle schools to increase the number and variety of activities before and after school. New activities planned include photography, Safe Sitter training, intramural sports, cooking classes, and more. Students will be involved in planning and decision-making as BAM develops.

Parents and community members who have an interest or skill to share or who belong to an organization that could provide volunteers or financial support for a before-or-after school activity should contact Betsy Brenneman, JASC Program Coordinator, at 463-1899 ext 231 or at betsy_brenneman@jsd.k12.ak.us

JASC is a community-based collaborative of 13 organizations working to improve academic and lifelong learning skills in Juneau’s youth by providing a broad range of fun, interesting and skill-building activities before and after school.
