A million bones, a million thanks

One Million Bones is a national social art project raising awareness and working to prevent future atrocities through a hands on art making project. On April 28th, 33 state capitals participated in an installation of plaster and ceramic bones. In Juneau, 35 participants helped create an installation on the dock by Marine Park, using nearly 1000 bones that were created by people of all ages. These bones will be sent to Washington, D.C. for a collaboration installation of 1,000,000 bones on the National Mall in the spring of 2013. The Students Rebuild Project will donate $1 for every bone, up to $500,000 for relief work in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Thank you to all of participants who attended the first workshops and installation in Juneau: Shona Strauser and the UAS Theatre Program, the Zach Gordon Youth Center, local potters Joyce Payne, Kaki Shields, Louise Kuntz-Tada, Debbie and Dick Fagnant, and the 125 people who made plaster bones at Sketch Studio. A huge thank you to Goldstein Improvement Company for donating art materials, Flordelino Lagundino for taking beautiful photos, and to Ryan Cortes Perez for filming and making a video about the Juneau installation.
