I am pleased to tell you that your United States Postal Mail Carriers of Juneau and Douglas collected 4,180 pounds of food from the “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive” held May 12. This was the 20th year that the National Association of Letter Carriers, in cooperation with the National Rural Carriers Association and the United States Post Office, has conducted the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
We are thrilled that we were able to collect over 3,000 pounds more food than last year. The weather was rainy and cold, but that didn’t discourage your mail carriers. As the saying goes, “Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the postmen from their appointed rounds”. The people of Juneau and Douglas still gave what they could to help feed our local people who need it the most.
We knew that collecting the food from our customers’ mail boxes and delivering it to our local food bank here in Juneau will help fill up the empty shelves at the Southeast Alaska Food Bank.
Thanks to all who gave and helped with our 2012 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
We also would like to thank Capital Copy for adding our event to their monthly bulletin; Laura Newsom at the Capital City Weekly for printing our event in the paper; Wayne Stevens, President and CEO of the United Way of Southeast Alaska for helping to get the word out and requesting volunteers to help out; Melissa Hurley at the State of Alaska, Department of Administration, Division of General Services for posting our event in the elevators of all State of Alaska office buildings; Jeff Brown at KTOO, TAKU 105 FM and affiliated stations for airing our event on the radio stations; Alaska & Proud, Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer, Super Bear Supermarket and Safeway for allowing us to place a postal hamper in their stores to collect food for those people who want to participate but don’t have a mail box; Troop Leader Julie Atkinson and all the girls that helped from Girl Scout Troop 4002 to unload and sort the food; Post Master Susan Johnson for allowing the Juneau and Douglas mail carriers to participate in this nation wide event; and last but not least, Tessany Alrich at Pizzeria Roma and Mitch at Bullwinkle’s Pizza Parlor for donating delicious pizza to help feed all the carriers, clerks and volunteers who did all the work to help feed our neighbors here in Juneau and Douglas.
With much gratitude,
Mark J. Piotrowski
