Caregiver trainings

Another season of Family Caregiver trainings has come to a successful end with the May 24 training, which celebrated National Older Americans Month’s “Never Too Old to Play” theme. We would like to thank the local businesses who donated door prizes that will assist family caregivers with getting their loved ones out and about this summer: Mt. Roberts Tram, Glacier Gardens, Willoughby’s Gourmet Popcorn and Kookamunga’s Confectionary.

Thanks also go to all the speakers in our 10-month series for the fantastic presentations and wealth of information they provided to caregivers this past year. Speakers included Robin Long with Alaska Pacific Bank on Preventing Elder Fraud; Nils Dihle with SESS, on Recognizing the Signs of Depression; Patti Moss with SESS, on Medicare 101; November’s weekly series of presenters, including Karen Godnick, Alaska Legal Services, Wills, Trusts and Powers of Attorney, Nancy Davis, HHCJ, Personal Care, Julie Delong of Wildflower Court and Lauren Champagne of Juneau Pioneers Home on Longterm Care Options, Doug Bridges, SESS, on Lifting and Transferring Safely, and Mary Szczepanski of Healing Touch and Bev Ingram from Rainforest Yoga on Selfcare for the Caregiver; Marianne Mills of SESS on Emergency Preparedness; Bridget Lujan with Elgee Rehfeld Mertz on Tax Tips for Caregivers; attorneys Vance Sanders, LLC, and James McMahon and Beth Chapman of Faulkner Banfield on Estate Planning and Medicaid Waivers; Annette Coyle with Bartlett Regional Hospital on Senior Nutrition; Mike Skaggs with SESS and Jill Lingle of Wildflower Court on Laughter Therapy; and Amber Smith with Alzheimers Resource Agency and Janet Lumiansky from SAIL on Travel Accessibility.

The monthly Family Caregiver trainings will resume again in the fall. As always, we love to hear from caregivers about their training and information needs, so we can work these into our schedule. You can contact the Senior Information and Caregiver Resource Center at 463-6177 with your suggestions and caregiving questions at any time.
