Mueller receives Ernie Turner Award

Beverly Mueller, center, holds her Ernie Turner award for her work in alcohol and drug abuse counseling, with National Committee on Alcohol and Drug Dependence Executive Director Matt Felix and Senior Vice Pres. Patient Services at Lakeside-Milam Recovery Centers Judi Bixby.

Beverly Mueller, CDC II, NCAC I, received the Ernie Turner Award at the Annual School on Addictions on May 8. This prestigious award is presented annually to an addictions counselor actively working in the field who has made outstanding contributions to the profession by demonstrating ethical standards, ongoing professional development, cultural competency, and interagency collaboration, according to a press release.

Mueller is a state and nationally-certified chemical dependency counselor who has been counseling in Juneau for 25 years. She is currently on staff at both the National Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence (NCADD) and Rainforest Recovery Center. She has also worked for Tongass Community Counseling Center and Lakeside-Milam Recovery Centers. She works with diverse populations and has designed and implemented treatment curricula and presentations for a variety of audiences.

Originally from Michigan, where she majored in fine arts, Mueller moved to Juneau in the early 70s and worked for the state natural resources department as a researcher, in retail management, as a trader with Shearson Lehman, as a substitute and after-school teacher for the Juneau School District and as the long-time manager of Dr. Richard Cook’s dental office. A successful Lakeside-Milam alumna herself, in 1987 Mueller began interning as a chemical dependency counselor at Lakeside’s Juneau clinic.

Mueller has been an active volunteer in the Juneau community, serving on the boards of the Gastineau Humane Society, National Alliance for Mental Illness, Gastineau Human Services, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Juneau Arts & Humanities Council, Friends of Alaska State Museum Executive Council and Juneau Centennial Committee. She has been a big sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters and helps set up the annual Wearable Arts Festival. She was president of Juneau-Douglas Little Theater and guest director of the Children’s Theater, which she organized. An avid sailor and long time member of the Juneau Yacht Club, she published a local sailing newsletter for many years.

Ernie Turner worked tirelessly to help people, especially native Americans and Alaska Natives, battle alcoholism after beating his own addiction. He was a counselor, treatment and training director and was well regarded in Alaska and Washington, where he focused his work. Recipients of the award are thought to exemplify Turner’s dedication, skill and ability to inspire others.
