DIPAC thanks our community volunteers

DIPAC would like to thank the special volunteers who helped make our education and community events a great success so far this year.

Our annual spring Seaweek program was held April 10 – 25 in conjunction with the Juneau School District. More than 580 students and adults visited the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery Visitor Center to participate in these classes. DIPAC sincerely thanks the following for helping to make our 2012 Seaweek field trip program so successful: Princess Tours for providing transportation for the school classes, Jennifer Thompson and Linda Harris of the Juneau School District for their coordination of the Seaweek program, and all the teachers, parents and friends who provided guidance for the students during the field trips. A special praise goes to our community volunteers who shared their love of marine biology with our students: Aaron Baldwin, George Bonnett, Trish Dearing, Don Greenberg, Janet Henderson, Mark and Betty Johnson, and Helena Zimmerman.

Our community open house for Juneau Appreciation Day was held May 5 and drew about 350 people to check out the hatchery visitor center and enjoy food, craft activities, the aquariums and our special touch tanks. Special thanks go to our community and student volunteers who helped with our family activities: Aaron Baldwin, Tyler Chandler, Emma Hopkins, Lawrence Hunt, Angel Kwok, Barb Sandberg, Dante Taylor and Melanie Tyska.

Additional volunteers greatly aided our various other community outreach events including family science nights and a rally program at Auke Bay and Riverbend schools, the Juneau Maritime Festival, the UAS “Go to College” program and the UAS Community Day. These were: Courtney, Shannon, Aaron Baldwin, Trish Dearing, Zach Graves, Janet Henderson, Megan Johnson, Liam Macaulay, Peggy Mattson, Kyle Smith, Rhys Smoker, Owen Squires, Dante Taylor and Adrian Wilson.

Equally appreciated are our student and community volunteers who helped maintain the aquariums and collect specimens for our aquariums and touch tanks this year: Aaron and Darwin Baldwin, Rai Behnert, George Bonnett, Trish Dearing, Emma Deats and family, Taylor Edwards, Don Greenberg, Janet Henderson, Laura Heumann, Mike and Eric Kirschner, Mark and Betty Johnson, Pat Malacha, Beth Maxie, Jeff Meuci, Katrina Ogai, Janet Olmstead and family, Barb and Dave Sandberg, Deray Sexton, Tamika Sloan, Annette Smith, Steve, Marsha and Owen Squires, Susan Tomlinson and family, Winter Torres and Nick Yurko. Special thanks to JDHS Project Choice students Thomas Tupper and Connor Rowan for their faithful service this last school year. Opportunities for many of our student volunteers were provided through cooperative partnerships with Juneau-Douglas, Thunder Mountain, and Yaakoosge Daakahidi high schools, for which we are most appreciative.

We welcome volunteers who would like to assist with our ongoing education and community outreach programs and aquarium collection and maintenance activities. For further information, contact Rich Mattson at 463-1630 or email at rich_mattson@dipac.net.
