Science fair superstars represent Juneau

Each year, the Southeast Alaska Regional Science Fair (SEAK-RSF) selects several of its top scoring students to compete in further competitions across the country during the summer.

 

Top-scoring Juneau-Douglas High School students Erin Gaffaney, Sally Paul, Ariana Gross and Amalia Tamone represented Southeast Alaska in the 2012 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Penn. May 14-18, where Gross and Tamone received a special award prize from the American Veterinary Medical Association of $1,000.

In addition, Dr. Lawrence Schaufler, Director of the SEAK-RSF, was selected to be a Grand Awards judge in Chemistry at the event.

Ian Andrews and Fiona Brown of JDHS traveled to Houston, Texas May 3-7 to compete in the 2012 I-SWEEEP (International Sustainable World – Energy, Engineering, Environment – Project) Olympiad, where they earned a silver medal for their project.

JDHS student Kevin Sigler went on to win the State level competition of the U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize event, and traveled to Boston, Mass. June 14-16 to represent Alaska in the national event.

Ruby Steedle and Rebekka Ord (JDHS), Rhys Coffee (Thunder Mountain High School), and Julia Buschmann (Petersburg High School) were selected to present their projects at the International Genius Olympiad competition in Oswego, N.Y. June 25-28. Coffee, representing herself and partner Zach Gianotti, received a bronze award, and Steedle, Ord, and Buschmann received honorable mentions at the event.

Each of these competitions featured top students selected from more than 1,000 competing science fair projects in the U.S. and more than 70 other countries. Congratulations are in order to all these students on their accomplishments in representing our region in these prestigious events.
