September is National Recovery Month

September is National Recovery Month and Juneau is celebrating with a host of events and campaigns.

 

On Wednesdays in September a “Recovery Film Festival” will feature three different films throughout the month at the Gold Town Nickelodeon (downtown). The film starts at 6:30 p.m. with a discussion to follow each showing. Visit www.goldtownnick.com for more details.

On Sept. 9, restaurants city-wide will participate in “FASD Awareness Day,” by offering free non-alcoholic beverages to pregnant women all day. This campaign hopes to raise awareness about fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and the importance of not drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

On Sept. 15, SEARHC will host a “Recovery Walk,” beginning at 1 p.m. at Marine Park, going across the bridge to Sandy Beach, where a celebration of recovery will follow.

On Sept. 21, there will be a “Swing Into Recovery” dance, featuring live swing music from Swing Ba-da Bing and swing dance lessons from Daniel Martin. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 8 p.m. at Rockwell (formerly Elk’s Club, downtown).

On Sept. 28, the “Recovery Poetry Slam” will feature poems inspired be recovery from alcoholism, drug abuse, and/or mental illness. The event at Rockwell (formerly Elk’s Club, downtown) will begin at 6:30 p.m. with an open mic, followed by the competition from 7-9 p.m.
