Beating the odds with help

Posted: September 15, 2012 - 11:06pm

Cancer Connection would like to thank the community of Juneau for making the “Beat the Odds – A Women’s Race Against Cancer” run/walk a great success on Aug. 25. We had more than 450 participants willing to go head to head with the liquid sunshine — all for a worthy cause. Although we advertise this as a women’s race, we wholeheartedly welcome all the men who want to run or walk in support of their mothers, sisters, wives or friends.

We had wonderful support from the business community and would like to gratefully thank our sponsors and supporters for their contributions. Our Sponsers are Alaska Airlines, Anchor Electric, Bartlett Regional Hospital, Bartlett Regional Hospital Foundation, Baxter Bruce & Sullivan, Diagnostic Radiology Consultants, Elgee Rehfeld Mertz, Fox River, GCI, Inland Boatmen’s Union, Interdesign, Juneau Bone & Joint Center, JRC – The Alaska Club, KATH-TV, KINY/MIX 106, K3 Radio, Longaberger by Sue & Colleen, McDonald’s, Nell Ann Wagoner, M.D., Northstar Sales, Nugget Alaskan Outfitter, Printing Trade Company, RE/MAX of Juneau, Sealaska, Southeast Medical Clinic, Super Bear Super Market, Valley Medical Care, Valley Paint Center and Wells Fargo. Our Supporters are Alaska Pacific Bank, Ann Doty/Longaberger Seaview Branch, Foggy Mountain Shop, Northland Services, Kristel at The Grind Coffee, Tyler Rental, Phil Paramore at the UAS Rec Center and United Way of Southeast Alaska.

We generously received donations for door prizes from: Longaberger – Ann Doty, Longaberger by Sue & Colleen, Foggy Mountain Shop, Alaska Airlines, Raintree Quilting, Columbia Sportswear, Shoefly, Pavitt’s Health & Fitness, TLC Massage, Tracy Olson, Wellspring, and JRC – The Alaska Club. We also must not forget all the quality socks donated by Fox River, a much sought after prize for finishing the walk or run.

An event such as this had the help of many, many volunteers and we thank those special folks from Elgee Rehfeld Mertz’s Theresa Harris, Sarah Griffin and Karen Tarver, Cathy Tide and all her race volunteers, Beth Weigel, Cancer Connection Board Members Ruth Johnson, Tish Satre, Pat Yearty, Deb Chalmers, Tammy Antoniadis, Sandra Bleicher and Mark Mickleson, greeter extraordinaire Lauren MacVay, Kathie Brown, Brooke Gunstrom, Robyn Free, Charlene Morrison, Fred Schmitz, Jake Yearty, Charlie Williams, Jeannie Smith, Larry O’Keefe, Klas Stolpe of the Juneau Empire, and many other individuals who stepped in where help was needed.

Funds raised from this event stay right here in Southeast Alaska, giving assistance to those dealing with cancer and their families. We also sponsor education programs and awareness events with the intent of prevention and early detection of cancer.

Thank you Juneau!

See you at next year’s Beat the Odds event.

Jody Schmitz,

Cancer Connection
