UAA professor to give clarinet recital Tuesday at JDHS auditorium

Mark Wolbers, Professor of Clarinet at the University of Alaska Anchorage, will present a concert for Juneau audiences at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the JDHS auditorium. The free recital, titled “The Long and Short of it,” will featuring music for clarinet and the rarely heard contrabass clarinet.

Wolbers performance on clarinet will feature works by composers such as Arban, Paganini and Kovacs, and will include multiple tonguing and other instrumental gymnastics. Music for the contrabass clarinet will include works by Grainger, Muczynski, Fauré, and the work “Deep” by composer Alex Shapiro, a piece that reflects the composer’s fascination with underwater ocean sounds.

Wolbers received his early clarinet instruction with the late Evelyn Angerman, and later with Fred Ormand and John Mohler. His doctoral degree in clarinet performance was earned from the University of Michigan, where he also served as Associate Conductor of the U of M Youth Band and Wind Ensemble under the mentorship of Larry Rachleff. Wolbers is Professor of Music at the University of Alaska Anchorage, where he serves as Division Head for Wind and Percussion Studies, Professor of Clarinet, Conductor of the University Wind Ensemble, and directs a number of chamber ensembles. An active performer, he is a founding member of the UAA faculty trio Alaska Pro Musica.

Wolbers also serves as the State of Alaska Chair for the National Band Association and the International Clarinet Association.
