A special Thank You to Prince of Wales Island, you really know how to throw a party!
Southeast Conference held its 52nd Annual Meeting on Prince of Wales Island in September, bringing 150 people to the Island for a record attendance of 250 people at our annual meeting. Planning local and thinking regional is so important to our scattered small communities and Southeast Conference is the organization that is always representing every community on a regional level. We want to thank Prince of Wales Island for everything they did to make our meeting a success. Without the cooperation of our communities we would never be able to accomplish what we do especially for our Annual get together. Our Scholarship auction netted a record breaking $26,000 and about 20 of the students from Island Schools attended our meeting. Thanks to the teachers for helping our students understand the importance of economic development in their lives and communities.
Special Thanks goes to Island Air Express for the use of a hangar for the reception, Klawock City School District for use of passenger vans, Susan Suarez for coordinating transportation, Ken Owen for coordinating transportation, helping with wireless internet, and other tasks, Jeannie McFarland for volunteering at several tasks, Thorne Bay Business Association for tables for host community reception, Prince of Wales Chamber of Commerce for lots of support — inserts for bags, office space and organizing events, POW Farmer’s Market for setting up tents on Tuesday, Millie Schoonover for shuttling attendees and coordinating inserts for bags, Ann James for volunteering at registration table and other tasks, Victoria Merritt for organizing the host community reception and other tasks, Brian Templin for shuttling attendees, Daniel Nelson for shuttling attendees, Joyce Mason for helping with funding city’s contribution, City of Craig Public Works staff for setting up and taking down the stage, Jan Bush POW Chamber President for lots of volunteer hours, Lynette Logan of First Bank and for organizing the event, The Nature Conservancy for its contribution to host community reception, Michael and Nora Kampnich for cooking lumpia during host community reception, Connie Killips for cooking lumpia during host community reception, AC Thompson House grocery store for the table at host community reception, Craig City School District for the meeting space, Sure Strike Charters for donating use of a passenger van, Heenya Kwaan Dancers, USDA Forest Service Craig Ranger District for driving to caves and offering cave tour, Clinton Cook CTA Tribal President for his welcoming address, the cities of Klawock, Thorne Bay, Naukati West, Inc., Kasaan, the Organized Village of Kasaan and the Hollis Community Council for hosting the community reception, Alaska Power and Telephone for wireless internet service and Jenn Wagonner for help with the host community reception.
