Local landscape landmark

The “Upside-Down Flower Towers” at Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure were named as America’s Most Interesting Landmark in Reader’s Digest poll.

Fallen trees are turned upside-down, planted into the ground trunk first, then covered with netting, greenery, and blooming flowers each year. On page 36 of the November issue of Reader’s Digest, the Upside-Down Flower Towers at Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure, located in Juneau, are recognized as the Most Interesting Landmark in America. The Upside-Down Flower Towers are one of the main attractions at Glacier Gardens, a one-of-a-kind botanical garden located in the heart of Tongass National Forest. Out of thousands of entries, the Flower Towers captured the Reader’s Digest audience and were selected over other monumental landmarks in the US — think Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone and the Space Needle.

Steve and Cindy Bowhay opened Glacier Gardens and The Yard Doctor shortly after arriving in Juneau in 1983 and the family-run nursery and landscaping company has been in business for more than 28 years with all of the couples’ six children involved in the business. The couple opened Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure in 1998. Visitors from all over the world come to learn about and experience the fascinating environment of the Tongass National Forest and to view the garden creations found at Glacier Gardens.
