Nov. 5 was “College of Regents Activity Night” for Juneau Chapter #439 Women of the Moose. Their special speaker for the evening was Roxanne Thomas, who is the Advocacy Coordinator for the Aware Shelter. Following Roxanne’s presentation the Collegians presented her with a check in the amount of $500, proceeds from the recent Fugal Fashion Show co-sponsored by Chapter #7 of the Eastern Star. These funds were earmarked to be used for their building fund.

Also in attendance that evening was acting director for Juneau Special Olympics, Michelle Umbs, board member Lee Lewis and a couple of the athletes. They were presented with a check in the amount of $1,200 to help with their travel to compete in Anchorage. Cindy Hudson, presented a check in the amount of $1,001 to Nancy Lehnhart, which the Women of the Moose had raised to secure and support the Art Is Elementary Program for 2013. This program had been eliminated due to school district funding cuts.

Other local projects currently under way by the Women of the Moose include supporting the JDHS Dance team, sponsoring a local family through the Salvation Army for Thanksgiving and Christmas, preparing boxes for “Operation Christmas Child,” and raising funds for the Gastineau Humane Shelter to name a few.

The next fundraiser by the College of Regents will be a Dessert Action to be held at the Moose Family Center on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. These funds will be used to support 10 of our Children at Mooseheart, our Child City, which is just outside of Chicago. You must be a member or invited quest to attend this function. See a current member for more information.

Guy About Town: Help for a town made of people

Hey, all! I hope you’ve been having a healthy, enjoyable January despite the meteorological mood swings. See, I don’t have to watch the tumultuous perpetual gray on the one hand, and on the other I don’t have to feel bad about being inside when it’s sunny. I just turn on my Costa Rica webcam and put my shades and Pet Sounds album on and party with those spreadsheets all day long.
