Girls on the Run wrap-up

Girls on the Run wrapped up its season Saturday with a culminating 5k fun run, a performance by Juneau gymnasts and words of encouragement and thanks.

The raised track and upper level of the Dimond Fieldhouse were abuzz with young runners, running buddies, coaches, volunteers and supporters.

“These girls have been working so hard, you girls have been working so hard over the last three months, you’ve been learning about respecting yourselves, you’ve been learning how to work with your team, you’ve been learning about gossiping and how to stop gossiping so everyone feels respected, you’ve been respecting yourselves and learning how to respect others.” Director Ati Nasiah said into a microphone to the crowd before the run, describing the journey of the program’s participants, “Over the last three months, participants have completed a community service project, they’ve been working so hard to love themselves, to celebrate their worth and value, and to know that they are unique and beautiful. And that is amazing.”

Girls on the Run, a program of AWARE, Inc., partners girls with community volunteers to build healthy habits, both physically and emotionally. The programs instill self-esteem and self-respect through physical training, health education, life skills development and mentoring relationships.
