Thunder Mountain students of the month

Thunder Mountain High School honored students for November are (front row) Andrew Clark, Devin Gross, Erin Buhler, Carmel Seagren, Jalyn Birchell and Ethan Kramp, with counselor Kathy McCasland, Principal Dan Larson and guest speaker Alex Calkins in the back row.

Each month, Thunder Mountain High School faculty and staff nominate students who have stood out for their behavior and attitude. Students are awarded a certificate and treated to a lunch hosted by the TMHS Parent Teacher Organization, where a guest speaker presents. This month’s guest speaker was Alex Calkins from the University of Alaska Southeast.

Freshman Andrew Clark was nominated by Holly Irino.

“Andrew is so cordial and helpful to everyone. He is very supportive of his classmates and willing to help them figure out answers to problems as needed. When asked to put two chairs up before the end of the day in sixth period class, Andrew stays after class to ensure that all of the chairs are stacked on the tables. He is always cheerful and willing to share an extra smile with anyone in need. Andrew’s positive attitude is contagious and a welcome addition to every class period. He volunteers for class activities and is wonderful friend for anyone he sits by.” Irino wrote.

Senior Devin Gross was nominated by Kathy McCasland.

“Devin has been doing great academically and I just wanted to recognize his efforts. I am really proud of Devin and can’t wait to see what great things he does after high school.” McCasland wrote.

Freshman Erin Buhler was nominated by Adriana Northcutt.

“Erin is a hard working student. She leads her peers not within words but with her respectful and responsible actions. I am very impressed with her maturity and dedication to her academics.” Northcutt wrote.

Sophomore Carmel Seagren was nominated by Stephen Gasche.

“Carmel has a quiet confidence and a focus that allows her to be successful in a large class. She is able to tune out distractions in a class and she does not lose sight of what she is trying to accomplish. Carmel was a valuable member of TMHS Swim and Dive Team and showed her ability to be a successful student and athlete. Her hard work ethic will serve her well in the future.” Gasche wrote.

Junior Jalyn Birchell was nominated by Dan Larson.

“Jalyn Birchell was nominated for her accomplishments at TMHS as a cheerleader for the past two years. This year she will become a student ambassador for People to People, where she will travel to Australia next summer. She is learning about leadership, responsibility and what it is like to live outside of Alaska. She represents TMHS in a positive way.” Larson wrote.

Senior Ethan Kramp was nominated by Brian Van Kirk.

“Ethan is the most generous student I have ever had. He always volunteers his time to help others. Examples of this can be seen in running the snack shack for football even when he is not participating in football and helping the band department at every fundraiser that we have done over his four-year tenure — Ethan assists the choir and orchestra fundraisers as well. Ethan is a model student in class and a role model outside of class and deserves recognition for all of his hard work and loving attitude of friends, community and school.” Van Kirk wrote.
