Advent luncheon Thursday

The community is invited to join the Juneau Cooperative Church Council for our annual Advent Luncheon. Advent is the time in the church year where we prepare for Christ’s coming. One of the symbols is the Advent wreath where a candle is lit on each Sunday to count down to Christmas.

The theme for this year’s luncheon is “Light one candle...” and we are honored to have three distinguished speakers. Rabbi Dov Gartenberg will discuss the role that candles have played in his faith story. Alaska Writer Laureate Nora Dauenhauer will speak about the role of candles in her Russian Orthodox tradition and Rev. Douglas Dye will explore Santa Lucia from a Swedish tradition.

The luncheon will be on Thursday, Dec.13, at noon at Northern Light United Church (400 West 11th Street). There will be homemade soups, breads and cookies. Those attending will get an opportunity to participate in playing Christmas carols with chimes. A free will donation will go to the Glory Hole.
