Michelle and Sarah Strickler, a mother and daughter involved in Rotary and Interact respectively, will travel to Mbiiko, Uganda Dec. 27 to volunteer at a primary school in the poor and densely populated community.
Michelle first visited Uganda to meet the child the Stricklers sponsor through U.S.-based nonprofit Hands4Uganda; during this trip, she said she realized how much “small acts can make a very big difference.”
The focuses for the Strickler women will be administering anti-parasite medication, a holiday food and nutrition program, and improving literacy by introducing a lending library, stocked with books purchased in Uganda. They will also visit the local Rotary club and share ideas about how to support the school and move it away from its current sponsorship model.
Currently the women are more than halfway to their fundraising goal, having been approved for a grant from Rotary District 5010 for $3,500. Community members interesting in donating may send checks made out to Juneau Glacier Valley Rotary by mail to Michelle Strickler at PO Box 35592, Juneau, AK 99803. Michelle and Sarah will share about their experience when they return.
