The Black Awareness Association of Juneau announces plans for the 2013 MLK Day celebration in Juneau. The theme for the 2013 Juneau celebration is “Living the Dream” and the celebration will be held on Monday afternoon, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church.
The 2013 celebration will include musical presentations from the AK Youth Choir, Sherry Patterson, a dramatic presentation and speakers from federal, state and local officials and clergy. Speakers include Senator Dennis Egan, Sally Smith, Daymond Geary, Mike Tagaban, Geny Del Rosario and Richard Green.
In conjunction with the celebration, a food drive to benefit local food bank Love INC will take place. Attendees are given the opportunity to participate by bringing any non perishable item or items to make a donation at the St. Paul celebration.
Juneau has had a Black Awareness Association since 1994, said Patterson, president of the association, in a February 2012 interview. “It was started by a small group of African Americans who saw the need to keep our culture alive here and to educate. Our culture, who we are, those dreams.”
The association sponsors three main events each year, starting with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day event. Also included on the calendar are the Soul Food Dinner and the Juneteenth celebration.
Everyone is encouraged to attend this family-friendly celebration. There is no fee to attend, though contributions will be accepted.
