Photo: Message on a blackboard

JoAnn Jones, a fifth-grade teacher at Auke Bay Elementary, stands next to a chalkboard with the signatures of former teacher Julie Gwyther’s fourth-grade students from the 1996-97 school year. Jones took over the classroom from Gwyther 15 years ago and had a whiteboard put up over the chalkboard for her use.

“I knew there was a message back there,” said Jones. “Julie said they left us a message.”

Jones took the whiteboard down to see the message because her class moved into a new classroom on Friday. Jones’ old classroom is to be demolished and rebuilt in the second phase of construction at the school.
