On Jan. 23, 12 students at Juneau-Douglas High School were recognized for their contributions to improving the school’s climate. Principal Ryan Alsup gave the keynote address and presented each student with a certificate and a special Student Recognition pin. Students and their parents were then treated to lunch provided by the JDHS Parent Group.

Freshman Mingming Yang was nominated by Dixie Weiss of the ELL Department.

“Mingming is being commended for her consistent positive attitude, effort and outlook on family life, school experiences as well as her future U.S. citizenship opportunities. She is determined to reach proficiency in English, her second language, while successfully adapting to our high school, teen life and our community. Mingming is an exemplary student in our English Language Learners Program.”

Swimming instructor Sara Hannan nominated Angelica (Alba) Cardiel.

“Alba took swimming in the fall, because she was on the JDHS dive team and wanted to improve her swimming. Alba gave her fullest effort every day and saw high improvement in her technique, stamina and speed. She is a strong swimmer now and will take the Life Guard certification course this semester. Next fall she will be a grand addition to the JDHS Swim team as well as the dive team!”

Math teacher Andrea Stasyszen nominated three students, all sophomores.

“Michael (Dale) has been extremely diligent to use his time outside of class to help him understand Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry to his fullest ability. With his great, easy-going personality, he’s a leader amongst peers as they work together to understand each of the new standards. He has worked hard to maintain his consistent grade in this class, earning an A+ for the first semester. For these things, I wish to honor Michael on a job well done.”

“Ciera (Kelly) has been an enthusiastic learner who consistently asks questions in Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry. She’s been a leader for peers around her and first semester was able to earn an A+ in this challenging course. She has worked hard to maintain her consistent grade in this class and for those things I wish to honor her wit this student recognition.”

“Tori (Victoria Ross) has been a consistent and persistent worker in Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry.  With very few absences for the first semester, she was able to wholly apply her learning and earn an A+ in this challenging course. While usually a bit more quiet than some classmates, she works well with her peers around her. She has worked hard to maintain her consistent grade in this class and for those things I wish to honor her with this student recognition.”

Tom Gagnon, a teacher in the Special Education department, nominated sophomore Jordyn Vinje.

“Jordyn has made an amazing turn-around in how she approaches new learning. She puts forth great effort to complete all of her assignments to her best ability. Way to go, Jordyn!”

Gaye Willis in the Attendance Office also nominated three students, junior Mariell Mendoza and sophomores Nanette Solanoy and Mariah Soriano.

“I would like to honor Mariell Mendoza, Nanette Solanoy, and Mariah Soriano for being the only students out of over 650 to have perfect attendance for the first semester of this year. They were on time and in every class, missing only for in-school testing or meetings. Their perfect attendance goes hand in hand with success. It is no coincidence that each of these young women earned a 4.0 for the semester! Thank you, Mariell, Nanette and Mariah, for your diligence and for your example. We honor your effort and commitment. Way to go!”

Science teacher Jonathan Smith nominated sophomore Claudia Soboleff.

“Claudia Soboleff represents all of those qualities that make for a great student. She is inquisitive and hard working. She is a good “team player” who always works well with her fellow students. But most of all her reaction to set backs has been to work harder and focus… and it is clearly working. Claudia started out struggling in my class and is now clearly “on top” of everything. She is truly a pleasure to have as a student.”

Counselor Barb Conant nominated two juniors, Freya Shrestha and Tori Talley.

“Last week for our eighth grade parent information night, Freya Shrestha and Tori Talley were phenomenal tour guides. As always, Freya and Tori responded to the counseling office’s last minute request for volunteers to be student ambassadors. The feedback from parents was that they were impressed with the professionalism and maturity they demonstrated while giving the tours and answering questions about our school.  The counseling office has come to rely on Frey and Tori whenever we need a responsible representative to assist in facilitating activities. Last fall they were instrumental in making the display for the “Wall of Hope” as well as making sure the kickoff assemble went well. They are the “quiet doers” who follow through on tasks without looking for recognition. Thank you Freya and Tori — you are both so appreciated for making out school a better place to be.”

Congratulations to these twelve January honorees — the teachers and staff at JDHS are very proud of you!
