Dec. 10 is observed across the world as Human Rights Day. It honors the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on that date in 1943. To mark this important date and in honor of Martin Luther Kind Jr Day, the Juneau Human Rights Commission presents the JHR Essay Contest, open to students grades six through eight in Juneau. The essays should answer the following question: What role do human rights play in your life?
The deadline is 4 p.m. March 22.
Winners of each grade level will be announced April 26 and awarded $100. Of all the entries, one will be chosen for publication in the Juneau Empire. Essays may be submitted to 155 S Seward Street, Juneau, AK, 99801, C/O JHR Essay Contest or emailed to city_clerk@ci.juneau.ak.us .
