Community members met to discuss a healthier Juneau

Community members representing a variety of Juneau-based organizations, interests and individuals met Dec. 12, 2012 to complete the fourth phase of MAPP – Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships. MAPP is a strategic approach to creating a healthier community; it aims to connect and empower community members and to give any interested community member a voice in creating a better Juneau.

Over the last two years, the MAPP team has developed a vision for the community. The team used surveys to gather information on strengths, weaknesses, challenges and opportunities we collectively face. During the fourth phase, Identifying Strategic Issues, participants summarized the data previously gathered to pinpoint 12 specific issues they would like to address and prioritized those issues based on when each should receive the most focus:

1. Access to quality child care

2. Access to affordable housing

3. Navigating economic challenges/conflicts

4. Healthy relationships within families and between diverse groups of people

5. Awareness of, access to, and motivation for healthy activities for all

6. Community connectedness systemically

7. Community connectedness interpersonally

8. Substance abuse – from prevention through “postvention”

9. Countering overweight and obesity

10. Care for the aging

11. Promoting healthy lifestyles and lifestyle choices

12. Access to quality healthcare — regardless of ability to pay

During the next phase, Formulating Goals and Strategies, participants will discuss action items to begin addressing these issues. The next community-wide meeting will be held in February and is open to any organization representative or individual.
