Church coalition hosts community lunch

The Juneau Cooperative Church Council, a coalition of some of the area churches, is hosting a community lunch throughout the 40 days leading up to Easter. The church has traditionally called this time Lent and set it aside as a time to think about life, death and meaning.

The lunches will be held on Thursdays at noon at Northern Light United Church from Feb. 21 through March 21. Northern Light United Church is downtown at 400 West 11th Street. Homemade soups and breads are served. All donations go to the Glory Hole.

The theme for this year is Great Themes of Faith: Stories of Struggle and Hope. A variety of musicians and community leaders will share their gifts as we prepare for Easter. On Feb. 21, Brian Vander Naald from UAS and Aaron Ferguson from JEDC will speak about creation. On Feb. 28, Rabbi Dov Gartenberg will share stories and thoughts around Exodus. On March 7, Phoebe Rohrbacher, artist and advocate, will speak about the valley of dry bones in Ezekiel. On March 14, Chancellor of UAS John Pugh will talk about wandering in the wilderness. Finally, on March 21, Deacon Charles Rohrbacher will celebrate the Exsultet; the Exsultet is the Easter proclamation of what God has done. He will share the icons he drew for the Illuminated Easter proclamation published by Liturgical Press.
