Next weekend, March 8 and 9, The Juneau World Affairs Council will host a forum on “China in the 21st Century.”

On Friday, March, 8, keynote speaker David Pietz will present a “Survey of Modern Chinese History from 1911,” at the UAS Egan Lecture Hall at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the forum will continue with a day-long schedule of speakers and panel discussions. At 9 a.m., Ann Lee will present “What the US Can Learn from China; at 10:45 a.m., Joseph Borich will speak on “China-Washington Trade Development,” and at 1:30 p.m., Pietz will present “The Environment and Resources of China.” Following the three lectures, a panel discussion will be held, beginning at 3 p.m., with a focus on “What Can be Expected in China-US Relations and Trade Development Going Forward?”

All of Saturday’s events will also be held at the UAS Egan Lecture Hall, and are free and open to the public.

David Pietz is Associate Professor of Modern Chinese History and Director of the Asia Program at Washington State University. His research interests lay in the environmental history of China and East Asia.

Ann Lee, a frequent media commentator on economic issues, is an adjunct professor of economics and finance at New York University and a former visiting professor at Peking University.

Joseph Borich, former U.S. Consul General in Shanghai, is the executive director and president of the Washington State China Relations Council.

Along with WorldQuest, the annual World Affairs Forum is one of the JWAC’s cardinal events. A topic of international importance and particular relevance is chosen by the board with input from members, who then assemble a panel of experts to gather in Juneau and discuss the issue over a two-day period. The forum provides an opportunity for the people of Southeast to meet and interact with chief thinkers and policy makers.
