Local volunteer shares about Haiti trip 3 years after quake

Maria Thibodeau Offer recently visited Haiti as a volunteer with Partners in Development, a group that strives to thelp the extreme poor attain independence and whole life improvement. Returned to Juneau, Thibodeau Offer is giving a presentation at the downtown public library Monday, March 18 at 7 p.m.

She will talk about her experiences in Haiti and how the country is rebuilding after the earthquake that left millions homeless three years ago. Some facts Thibodeau Offer presents to give perspective on the country of 9 million people include more than a million people remain homeless in capital Port au Prince, 80 percent of the population lives in poverty, and only 50 percent of children attend school.

The program runs year-round, with volunteers from abroad working in Haiti one week per month. Volunteers range from educators to construction workers, helping to rebuild the whole community. Thibodeau Offer taught yoga and worked on literacy projects.
