YAC funds teen activities

The Juneau Community Foundation’s Youth Action Committee is pleased announce its 2012-2013 grants and its 2013 grant focus.

The YAC members granted more than $4,000 to three organizations in Juneau to provide teens healthy alternatives to drug and alcohol use.

YAC granted $1,000 to Southeast Road Runners’ Lynn Canal Running Camp, a summer running camp for Southeast teens. The grant will be used to help keep the camp affordable to its participants and to increase the number of participants in 2013.

YAC also granted the Zach Gordon Youth Center $2,000 to help support four youth activities, including excursions to Eaglecrest, the Dimond Park Aquatic Center, participation in Parks & Recreation basketball, and instruction for a skateboard, drawing and painting project.

Jess Brown, Teen Advocate at Zach Gordon, accompanied eight youth to Eaglecrest in February for snowboarding, skiing and fireworks.

“The Foundation opened up a huge opportunity to teens who otherwise would not be able to go and enjoy a day in the snow at Eaglecrest. One girl was able to take a lesson in snowboarding, and by the end of the day was having a great time snowboarding down the mountain,” Brown said.

The Juneau Shambhala Center also received over $1,000 in support for “Mindfulness in Action,” which will teach teens how to better manage impulsive behaviors and to develop greater awareness of thought patterns.

This spring, the members of the YAC will begin their fundraising efforts to raise funds to support programs that will promote success in high school and educate teens on a variety of post-secondary opportunities.
