Under the direction of Missouri Smyth, Orchestra/Choir Teacher at Floyd Dryden Middle School, the FDMS eighth Grade Orchestra recently returned from participating in the World Strides, Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim, Calif. Based on the National Music Standards, the orchestra earned an ‘Excellent’ rating for a Silver Medal in the Junior High School category. In addition, Justin Sleppy won the ‘Time to Start Dreamin’ Award presented to a student who actively gives of themselves on behalf of their family, music program, school, and community.
The eighth Grade Orchestra also attended the West Covina School District Pre-Festival String Orchestra Concert held at the Performing Arts Center in Baldwin Park, and visited Jones Junior High School where they had a music exchange with Paul Grant’s orchestra. Smyth met Grant two summers ago while attending American String Teacher’s Association training at Ohio State University, School of Music.
The eighth Grade Orchestra students were very pleased with their performance. Smyth and the students would like to thank parents for making it possible for them to have this awesome music experience; Jeanette Sleppy, Norma Watt, and Shaun McCormick for chaperoning; Principal Tom Milliron and Vice Principal Haifa Sadighi for their continual support of the music programs at FD, the FD staff, Superintendent Gelbrich for approval of the trip, and the community of Juneau committed to enriching the lives of young people with music.
