Six Thunder Mountain High School students were recognized by faculty and staff for their contributions in and out of the classroom. The students are treated to lunch by the Parent Teacher Organization and student David Russell-Jensen was awarded by Rotary for his service.

PE teacher James Kearns nominated freshman Chris Worrell.

“I nominated Chris because he has become dedicated and consistent participant in my PE class. He started a bit slow but now he dresses every day and is a good participant. He is always willing to put forth a good effort and his dedication to making sure he does what is asked of him also helps those around him to be successful. I think that Chris needs to be recognized as a student who is willing to make a change and become a great example of a good Falcon,” Kearns wrote.

Kathy Carl of special education nominated sophomore Gilleon Fowlkes.

“Gill has worked to overcome his social weaknesses. He is currently a successful TA for Ms. Ridgway. Gill has participated in interviews and DVR staff and joined the TMHS track and field team despite being uncomfortable in social settings. Gill continues to be helpful in class as he assists others with transitions and thinking socially. Currently Gill is willingly working with staff to improve grades. This is a huge step for Gill, as he has not previously shown any desire to “get grades.”  Gilleon has grown and matured over the semester. This recognition would be one more opportunity for him to stretch his comfort boundaries,” Carl wrote.

Russian teacher Janna Lelchuck nominated sophomore Dylan Taylor.

“Dylan is a dedicated learner, works very hard, does extra activities, (and is)reliable! (He) received Gold medal in the National Russian Essay contest. (He) speaks amazing Russian (and) helps with all kinds of Russian projects. Way to go Dylan!” Lelchuck wrote.

Music teacher Tyree Pini nominated senior David Russell-Jensen.

“David has made a push during this past year to get involved with (the) music community of Juneau. We benefit from his involvement here at TMHS. In March, he helped organize the Juneau Symphony Showcase, he performs with the Juneau cello choir, and he is our principal cellist in symphony,” Pini wrote.

Math teacher Steve Gasche nominated junior Damon Cook.

“Damon is a conscientious worker. He takes school seriously and excels because of his strong work ethic. He recently earned a 100 percent on his trigonometry test. Damon will continue to do well in class,” Gasche wrote.

Social Studies teacher Timm Henry nominated junior Morgan Nicholas.

“I would like to recommend Morgan Nichols. Morgan is a junior who has recently transferred here from Idaho. He is a very hard worker with interesting and freely shared insight. Students, mostly underclassmen, in Alaska History look up to him as his contributions are always worth note.  I look forward to having him in future classes,” Henry wrote.
