Docent Training Workshops to be held at Alaska State Museum starting May 8

The Alaska State Museum is now looking for volunteer docents, or tour guides, for the upcoming season.

Seven short workshops will take place May 8 – 18 to offer tips and techniques on giving cultural tours at the museum. With the construction of the new Library, Archives, and Museum building well underway, this will be the last chance to learn this skill in the current museum building.

The commitment of giving tours during the summer is flexible. Typically, volunteer docents contribute anywhere from four tours per month to many more, depending on the individual’s personal schedule. No prior experience is necessary.

For more information on becoming a docent, contact the museum at 465-2901, e-mail mary.irvine@alaska.gov, or attend the first training session, Wednesday, May 8, from 8–11:30 a.m., on which day a sample tour of the galleries will be given. The group will also tour the Collections Vault behind the scenes in the basement.
