Aurora Strings on their way soon

The Aurora Strings Ensemble makes music at the Mendenhall Glacier. The group of young musicians, with a few adults, will head to China in three weeks to perform and play with other young musicians.

With less than three weeks to go, it is time for Juneau String Ensemble musicians to offer a hearty thank you to the community that has supported and encouraged them for the past two years.

Two years ago we set our financial goal at $75,000 to send 23 young Juneau musicians, an accompanist and their conductor to China for a once-in-a-lifetime musical exchange.

In China they will have the unique opportunity to play music with young Chinese musicians, visit local schools, learn the history and culture and see the place from where their esteemed conductor hails. It seemed a daunting task — how could kids ever raise this amount of money? The efforts have been diverse and varied, kid- and parent-generated — and they have been successful. We have raised $45,000 and every child has raised a significant portion of their travel expenses.

We couldn’t have done it without you Juneau. You bought our Rie Muñoz prints (generously donated by Juan Muñoz), contributed to our Kickstarter, bought our raffle tickets (we still have some available), hired these musicians to play at your parties, bought items at our garage sales and plunked coins in our tip jars last summer. You drove your taxi by and told our story to tourists. You bought tickets to our concerts and let us earn money cleaning up the community. You asked about the trip and shared in our excitement! Thank you, we are so grateful for your help!

We have one last performance before we depart the Great Land for the Great Wall. Come see us on May 18, at the Juneau Jazz & Classics Community Day on Campus at the University of Alaska Southeast. We’d love to say thank you with a song!

Gratefully yours,

The musicians, conductor and parents of Aurora Strings, Juneau String Ensembles
