Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hoonah was awarded the Outstanding Youth Litter Patrol award for 2012 by Alaskans for Litter Prevention & Recycling. Last summer, the Thursday Troopers Litter Patrollers picked up 154 bags of litter and many large items including tires, bicycles, engine parts, styrofoam blocks and wire. They cleaned 22 miles of roadway as well as around the airport and ferry terminal; they recycled all the aluminum cans. These bold patrollers ventured into the forest —supervised, of course — and cleaned up after the bears that hauled trash from nearby yards. Efforts continue this year. They had a successful Earth Day Clean-Up on April 20th in partnership with the City of Hoonah, Hoonah City Schools, Hoonah Indian Association, Hoonah Recyclers and US Forest Service. Volunteers will meet at the William & Mary Johnson Youth Center some Thursdays from 1:30-2:30 p.m. this summer to keep Hoonah looking good.
