Juneau Cadette Girl Scout Troop 4011 partnered with the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities’ Safe Routes to School Program to encourage Juneau elementary and middle schools to participate in National Bike to School Day on May 8. We are most grateful to Carrie Goodbrake, outreach specialist with the Safe Routes to School program, for guiding us through this project.
We organized a bike to school event at Floyd Dryden Middle School which brought approximately 20 percent of the students to school on bikes, the highest participation rate of any Alaska middle school.
We would like to thank the following people who helped make the day at Floyd Dryden a success: DOT&PF employees Stephanie Bushong, Marcheta Moulton and Steve Soenksen; Juneau Freewheelers John McConnochie, Maren Haavig, Jamie Bursell and Greg Huebschen; Juneau Police Officers Hatch and Brink; scout dads Dean Graber and Mike Barnhill; and SAGA, who loaned us reflective vests for the day. We also appreciate the support we received from Floyd Dryden principal Tom Milliron, Assistant Principal Haifa Sadighi, technology teacher Alan Degener and the Parent Teachers Organization. The culmination of this project was earning our Girl Scout Silver Award. Thank you all!
