Dog bakery business opens in Kodiak

Posted: June 2, 2013 - 12:03am

KODIAK — A new business is helping Kodiakans pamper their pups with fresh dog treats.

The Barkery, a dog treat bakery, sells treats made with natural ingredients.

Amy DiObilda, owner of The Barkery, moved to Kodiak two months ago with her husband, a Coast Guardsman.

She started the business because she had already been making dog treats for her own dogs for more than a year. DiObilda started making homemade treats after one of her dogs was sickened by some store-bought treats.

“The one actually got sick from eating some store-bought dog treats, so I decided to start making them homemade with ingredients I knew,” she said. “I figured I could make them for other people’s dogs that might have allergies or other issues.”

DiObilda researched recipes online and has a cache of ideas that have gone over well with her pit bull lab and pit bull terrier.

“They are getting fat,” DiObilda said. “They are my taste testers. They’ve been having a good time with it.”

The business is part-time for DiObilda, who works as a medical assistant at the North Pacific Medical Center. She enjoys cooking, and it usually only takes her about an hour and a half to make a batch of around 50 treats.

“It’s something fun I like to do, so I figured why not do it,” DiObilda said.

The Barkery’s menu rotates among 25 to 30 recipes, depending on what ingredients are available and what the demands of the dog owners in Kodiak are.

Some of her current menu options include bodacious bones, made of turkey bacon or cheddar, peanut butter and cheddar training treats and peanut butter pumpkin treats. Prices range from $3 to $5 depending on the size of the treats. All treats can be made gluten-free for an additional $2.

Treats are made fresh to order and have a shelf life of two to three weeks. They can be frozen for up to six months. Special requests are accepted.
