Stamping out hunger

Thank you to all Douglas and Juneau residents for making this year’s Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive a great success! We collected 4,109 lbs. of food.

Now that this year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is over, the letter carriers wanted to say Thank You! We were so pleased to see our customers giving back to their community by donating food on May 11. Even though it was a gloomy and rainy day, it was nice to see so many postal customers putting food out to give to our local food banks. It was nice that we could do more for our community than just deliver the mail — we could also help feed people in need. All the food donations were divided up between Helping Hands Food Bank located at 6590 Glacier Highway, and Southeast Alaska Food Bank located at 10020 Crazy Horse Drive. All the food collected stays here in Juneau to help feed the people in our city.

Darren Adams, the Operations Manager at the Southeast Alaska Food Bank, can be reached at 789-6184 and Betty Kaplor, the Operations Manager for Helping Hands Food Bank, can be reached at 789-4390. If you have any questions regarding their hours of operation, or if you still want to donate food items, please give them a call. Adams and Kaplor were very appreciative, as was I, Mark Piotrowski, the Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive Coordinator, for all who helped advertise to get the word out and helped support this great annual event. The food drive happens every year on the second Saturday in May nation-wide, and this year marks the 21st year the event has been conducted. It is the largest one day food drive in the United States.

We want to give special thanks to Jeff Brown at KTOO for creating a radio public service announcement that was broadcast on almost all radio stations. Thanks to Alaska-Juneau Communications Inc. and all affiliated stations for airing our event, and thanks to Juneau’s United Way for arranging volunteers. Thanks also to the Juneau Empire and reporter Emily Russo Miller for publishing the article regarding the food drive. We also want to thank all our neighborhood grocery stores, Foodland IGA, Fred Meyer, Safeway, Super Bear and Walmart, who let us place a postal hamper in their stores for a week. This allowed those people who do not have a mail box to donate at their local grocery store. Last but not least, we want to thank Susan Johnson, our Post Master, for allowing the employees at the Auke Bay, Federal Building, Douglas and Mendenhall post offices to participates in this year’s “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. Again, thanks to you Douglas and Juneau for your support. Mark your calendar for 2014 for the 22nd “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive on the 2nd Saturday in May.
